Friends + Citizens is an AIA-award-winning, summer-long design studio that integrates the academic and professional worlds of architecture for a group of interns. Designers from a variety of different disciplines are chosen to participate in a theoretical design project, along with practical daily work. The 2023 summer interns were all from South Dakota State University including myself, Cheyenne Miller, James Van Westen, and Kelsey Gustaf.
Our task was to consider how the 10th and 11th Street viaducts in Downtown Sioux Falls could be repurposed to better connect two disparate sections of downtown. My specific duties as the graphic design/marketing intern consisted of designing the Friends + Citizens Summer 2023 book, illustrating diagrams and maps, constructing presentations, creating marketing concepts, and the list goes on.
